What is Construction?

Construction covers the processes involved in delivering buildings, infrastructure, industrial facilities and associated activities through to the end of their life. Construction also covers repairs and maintenance work, any works to expand, extend and improve the asset, and its eventual demolition, dismantling or decommissioning. Building construction is the process of adding structures to areas of land, also known as real property sites. Some construction projects are small renovations, repairs, painting, and fixing leaks. However, more complex or ambitious projects usually require additional multi-disciplinary expertise and manpower.

Building Science

Building science is a field of knowledge that draws upon physics, chemistry, engineering, architecture, and the life sciences. Understanding the physical behavior of the building as a system and how this impacts energy efficiency, durability, comfort and indoor air quality is essential to innovating high-performance buildings. Modern building science attempts to work with models of the building as a system, and to apply empirical techniques to the effective solution of design problems.

Building Thermodynamics

Building science is concerned with heat flow through building enclosures and heat supplied to or removed from conditioned space. The laws of thermodynamics lay down the fundamental rules for understanding heat, and that means if you want to understand building science better, you need to know some thermodynamics. Temperature, moisture and air pressure all have an effect on durability of your home, indoor air quality, and whether your home is comfortable or not.

There are a few ways heat moves through at building. It sounds complicated but the basics of heat movement are really quite simple. Here are some examples.

  • RADIATION

    Most of us living in a warm climate have felt the warmth while standing in front of a large picture window on a really hot day. The heat is radiating from your window to your body. The opposite can also happen. Ever been around a big bon fire on a cool night. Even if you’re standing far from the fire, you can still feel the heat of the fire on your exposed skin. That’s heat radiating from the hot fire moving to your cooler skin.

  • CONDUCTION

    When a warm object is in direct contact with a colder object, heat moves from hot to the cold. Ever been burned by a frying pan, heat from the pan burns your skin when you touched it. How about cold hands, if you stick them in your armpits, the heat from your armpit moves to your hands. You learn that from living in a cold climate.

  • Convection

    This happens when there is a difference in temperature between an object and the air around the object. This is how our homes stay warm in the winter. A fan moving air across a heat exchanger in a furnace is a good example.

  • Moisture

    Moisture moves from a wet place to a dry place. The evaporation of water is a great example. A puddle in my driveway after a heavy rain will eventually go away. Some of the water absorbs into the soil and the rest of the water will evaporate into the air. Both the soil and air are dryer than the liquid water.

  • Air pressure

    Air pressure.  Air wants to move from an area of high pressure to an area of low. A balloon can be used as an example. Blow up a balloon, and you’re compressing the air inside the balloon. The air being contained by the balloon is at a higher pressure. When you open the end of the balloon, the air will escape, returning to the area of lower pressure.
